Talking about sustainable Olympics on Deutsche Welle television

This was fun. I really appreciated the fact that Biresh Banerjee – a very good and thoughtful host – gave a lot of time to the issues. This stuff is nuanced and it takes time to get it right. And I was stunned that DW left my whole segment uncut.

Every other interview I’ve done (whether print, radio, or TV), the majority gets cut from the final production. Once, I gave a 20 minute interview for a TV station that shall remain nameless, and the ending product was a largely hagiographic piece all about how the Olympics are doing great with sustainability. They gave me less than 20 seconds of airtime, and chose the mildest quote they could. Instead of nuance, we got soundbites.

This time, on DW, was the opposite. I wish I could’ve been in the studio in person, because I’m sure the experience would be a little less weird than talking to the world from my living room. But overall this was a great time, and I think it’s encouraging to see in-depth journalism like this.

You should watch the whole piece, but I come in after the 3:30 mark
